As part of the EXPOSED. Torino Foto Festival program

On May 2, 2024, within the framework of the EXPOSED. Torino Foto Festival program, the three-chapter exhibition Expanded makes its debut. This project presents a thorough exploration of the Photographic Collection housed at the Fondazione per l'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT, bringing together three esteemed institutional venues for a seamless journey: Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, GAM - Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino, and OGR Torino.

During Expanded Without (May 2 - July 28, 2024) at Binario 1 of the OGR Torino,  the spotlight shines on works produced off-camera,  when images are generated without resorting to traditional photography. Exhibited installations and immersive environments transcend the boundaries of the photographic medium, offering authentic experiential fields, within which viewers become part of the process of image construction.

The exhibition opens with Nanda Vigo's Frammenti di riflessione  (Exoteric gate), a space of inner crossing where neon's luminous vibrancy converges with the reflective allure of mirrors. Through her extensive exploration of light,  Nanda Vigo seamlessly integrates it as both a structural component of space and a means to transcend its physical confines. Mirrors and light serve as gateways, unlocking thresholds that inspire the mind to conjure and process vivid images.

Continuing, Teresita Fernández's imposing Waterfall condenses in its motionless and silent presence all the dynamic and thunderous energy of the natural phenomenon to which it refers. Made of long bands of polychrome acrylic material, Fernández's Waterfall alludes to the permanence of form through the idea of continuous change. The water movement is evoked through alternating different shades of blue and white stripes, reminiscent of photograms capturing the various stages of a waterfall's descent in nature.

At the center of Binario 1, L’osservatore non l’oggetto osservato (1981-2003), by Remo Salvadori. Here, the artist transfigures into copper the ordinary photographic tripod. The presence of its shadow, echoing through images from the history of photography, hints at the perspective of the photographers who captured them. Yet, Salvadori's masterstroke lies in multiplying this silhouette into a play of light, shattering the photographer's singular viewpoint into a tapestry of interconnected perspectives. This not only encompasses the objects and subjects of observation, but also prompts a shared contemplation on the act of perception and the profound introspection of witnessing oneself as a witness.

Closing the exhibition is Liquid Crystal Environment (1966-2017) by Gustav Metzger, a large environmental installation featuring mesmerizing, kaleidoscopic projections that continuously shift and evolve. This work stands as one of the artist's most ambitious endeavors using liquid crystal technology, a field rooted in the pioneering research of botanist Friedrich Reinitzer in 1888 and later expanded upon by German physicist Otto Lehmann, who introduced the term "liquid crystals" in 1889.

EXPANDED - The Project
Within the framework of the EXPOSED. Torino Foto Festival program, the three-chapter exhibition Expanded makes its debut. This project presents a thorough exploration of the Photographic Collection housed at the Fondazione per l'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT, bringing together three esteemed institutional venues for a seamless journey. At Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Expanded With (May 2 - August 25, 2024), curated by Marcella Beccaria, delves into works where the photographic medium serves as a springboard for exploring different types of relationships with the landscape, featuring pieces by pioneers of Land Art, Arte Povera, and Body Art. Meanwhile, at OGR Torino, Expanded Without (May 2 - July 28, 2024), focuses on artworks produced off-camera, in which the image is generated without resorting to the traditional photographic medium. Lastly at GAM - Turin's Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Expanded - I Paesaggi dell'Arte (May 3 - September 1, 2024), curated by Elena Volpato, spotlights photographers who skillfully seize the multiple aspects of art, capturing its expansive landscapes comprised of artworks, architectural marvels, self-portraits, and artist’s moments of creativity both within the studio and amidst natural settings.

Expanded investigates the image as an expanded field, citing the writings of American art theorist Rosalind Krauss. In 1979, Krauss published Sculpture in the Expanded Field, a seminal text in which she analyzes the ways the practices of artists active from 1968-1970 reshape the traditional concept of sculpture to reach what she defines as the “site construction.” Krauss observes how artists establish new practices and modify the concept of artwork using various media interchangeably, including photography, mirrors, and video, in addition to sculpture itself.
