Heat Island brings urban space onto the stage, transforming it, through rhythm, friction, sparks and sound, into a pulsating field of possibility. A sealed, “asphalted” ground, the roar of traffic and the distant chirping of crickets evoke ecological fractures that disrupt ecosystems.
Three performers scrape away layers of ground with specially prepared shoes, turning friction into the driving force of choreography, sound and light, in a performance that oscillates between collective rhythm and fragmented gestures, between references to pop culture and abstract physical states.
Heat Island subtly alludes to TikTok choreographies, viral trends and music videos, where attention and meaning emerge and vanish with the same speed as sparks. The sparks etch fleeting traces onto the surface, marks of memory, while the soundscape shifts from precise rhythmic impulses reminiscent of road traffic and car engines to overheated, dissolving atmospheres.
CHIARA BARTL-SALVI
Chiara Bartl-Salvi is a choreographer, performer, and visual artist based in Vienna. She studied Fine Art and Media at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where she developed a strong interest in space, objects, and stage architectures that continues to shape her artistic practice today. Her work explores the interplay between movement, sound, and material within the context of temporality and fragility. Her recent performance, Heat Island, premiered in May 2025 at Tanzquartier Wien as part of the Rakete program and was co-produced with Tanzquartier Wien and Toihaus Salzburg. The year before, she presented her first stage work What remains for us but linger? in co-production with WUK performing arts. Bartl-Salvi’s performances merge classical dance forms with pop culture and viral trends and have been shown at Tanzquartier Wien, WUK performing arts, Kunstverein Eisenstadt, and nova space Weimar, among others.
