LIU ZHUYANG presents SPEAKERS + CORIN presents DIWA
An event within Evolving Soundscapes, the public programme of MAO Museo d’Arte Orientale di Torino, developed in collaboration with OGR Torino and COMBO for the exhibition Song Dong. Soul Out, curated by Chiara Lee and freddie Murphy.
On Sunday, 14 February, LIU ZHUYANG and CORIN present two performances at OGR Torino exploring sound, the body, technology and tradition.
LIU ZHUYANG
Liu Zhuyang is a transmedia artist, guzheng player, sound artist and composer. Their practice brings together traditional instrumental techniques, electronics and improvisation, creating performances, installations and immersive environments in which sound, bodies, technology and space interact. Shaped by experiences of cultural multiplicity, migration and translation, Liu’s work explores misalignment, misunderstanding and collective participation as ways of negotiating coexistence across difference. Approaching instrument building as a form of cultural technology, Liu creates original instruments, wearable sound systems, human subwoofers, kinetic sculptures and reconfigurable acoustic-electronic structures.
In Speakers, a wearable sound installation, the body becomes both microphone and amplifier: movement generates unstable feedback and transforms the surrounding space into a network of resonances activated by proximity. The work investigates the politics of sound and embodied perception, turning feedback into choreography and listening into a shared physical experience. Liu has presented work at the V&A Museum, the British Museum and Café OTO.
CORIN
Producer, composer, DJ and performer Corin works across performing arts, sound design, theatre and club culture. Classically trained as a pianist, Corin combines keyboard melodies with hyper-digital production, bringing traditional forms and contemporary electronic sound together in speculative worlds shaped by ancient mythologies, science fiction and Filipino heritage. The music moves through trance, baroque-inflected atmospheres and experimental electronics, creating a dialogue between Western and non-Western musical traditions. DIWA grew out of research into Filipino folk traditions and Corin’s matrilineal ancestry in Batangas, in the region of Lake Taal, formed within a volcanic crater. Kulintang gongs, polyrhythms and traditional tuning systems combine with industrial percussion, synthesisers, sampling and granular synthesis. Developed with VFX artist Tristan Jalleh, the project creates an immersive audiovisual universe inspired by Filipino creation mythologies, moving through volcanic and oceanic landscapes and encountering creatures such as the Bakunawa, the dragon that, according to legend, devours the moon. Earth, lava and water converge in a speculative landscape shaped by ancestry and transformation. Corin has performed at Unsound Adelaide, Palais de Tokyo, Berlin Atonal and CTM Festival, and hosts a bimonthly programme on NTS Radio.
