Økapi
A bit zebra and a bit giraffe, Økapi is the zoomorphic collage par excellence.
Filippo Edgardo Paolini, aka Økapi, is an electronic music composer, a French-Italian sample cutup artist, exponent of the plunderphonics music genre. He defines himself as an ecological mammal: he has never generated a sound, yet he orchestrates pieces of intertextual layering with refined irony and symphonic lightness. Thanks to his omnivorous culture, Økapi mashes up micro musical phrases to create never-heard-before electronic music.
Over the years, Økapi has played, collaborated and improvised with many musicians such as Zu, Peter Brotzmann, Mike Patton, Matt Gustafson, Geoff Leigh, Mike Cooper, Damo Suzuki, Andy EX, Kawabata Makoto, Eugenio Colombo, Vittorino Curci, Niobe, Anna Clementi, Gianni Gebbia, Matt Bernardino Penazzi, Elio Martusciello, Pasquale Iannarella, Edison Studio, Roy Paci, composing music for theaters (Gubbio Theater Festival, Ostia Antica Festival), for the cinema ("Cover Boy" by Carmine Amoroso, "Tre donne morale" by Marcello Garofalo), and for television (Rai - Radiotelevisione Italiana) and site specific installations (Roma Europa 2017).
Økapi also boasts collaborations with the world of visual arts: he performed at the Venice Biennale, at "Controindicazioni", "RingRing b92 Around the World", "Biennale artisti d'Europa e del Mediterraneo" "Musica 90" (Torino). In 2000 he also played with Christian Marclay in a show broadcasted by Radio Rai.
"Opera Riparata", is yet another coproduction born from an unfinished project by Bruno Munari and Davide Mosconi: 40 remixes lasting 1 minute and 11 seconds of the most famous arias of the opera. Five years later, in 2017, he made "Pardonne-moi Olivier! 16 oiseaux pour Olivier Messiaen ", a symphonic work in three acts dedicated to the French composer Messiaen and his passion for bird songs. From both albums, Økapi created a live audio-video performance in collaboration with visual artist Simone Memè. His latest work "Otis-Vertical Tales" (Folderol 2020), dedicated to Otis Elisha Graves the inventor of the elevator, was published in CD, digital, and picture book formats.
