On October 10at 9 PM, journalist Stefano Nazzi will take the stage at Binario 3 in conversation with Andrea Malaguti to present his new book Predators, a work in which the author recounts the “golden age” of serial killers in the United States, from the 1960s to the 1990s. The book will be available for purchase at the local bookshop.
With his intense, fast-paced prose, Stefano Nazzi retraces those dark decades, taking us inside the minds of some of America’s most terrifying serial killers. Like John Wayne Gacy, who dressed as a clown at children’s parties and buried teenagers beneath his house. Edmund Kemper, the gentle giant who chatted about Shakespeare with police officers, then went back to dismembering corpses. Or David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam, who claimed he acted on the orders of a demon-possessed Labrador.
Alongside them are the stories of the men and women who chased, studied, and catalogued them. In the basements of Quantico, two FBI agents, Robert Ressler and John Douglas, began analyzing the profiles of serial killers and then talking with them. Together with psychologist Ann Burgess, they visited maximum-security prisons and interviewed thirty-six serial killers. From those conversations, criminal profiling was born, the idea that behind the apparent chaos there was a method, and that therefore it might be possible to predict the unpredictable.
