S+T+ARTS4WaterII – Ports in Transformation is a project that brings together art, technology, and science to address the environmental and societal challenges in Europe's ports and port cities. The project aligns with the European Green Deal's goal of making Europe climate-neutral by 2050 and focuses on Sustainable Development Goals related to water, cities, and life below water.
The initiative aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration through art residencies, workshops, exhibitions, and conferences involving artists, researchers, stakeholders, and ICT experts. By leveraging digital technologies and artistic collaboration, the project seeks to
drive innovation and promote sustainability within port ecosystems and water management systems.
Europe's ports are crucial hubs for employment, economic development, and welfare, but they also face challenges such as circularity, infrastructure development, global transport, and pollution.
S+T+ARTS4WaterII views ports as ideal testbeds for innovative solutions to these challenges, aiming to inspire broader environmental stewardship and sustainability.
The project engages various stakeholders, including authorities, companies, municipalities, and agencies, to explore ethical and sustainable solutions enabled by advanced digital technologies like AI, IoT, drones, VR, and AR. Through collaborations with the artistic and cultural sector, research institutes, startups, and industry, the project aims to impact the broader water community in Europe and beyond, reaching over 15,000 individuals and developing an ambitious programme of 20 artist residencies.
Key components of the project include residencies, expert meetings, a Summer School, community events, mentoring programs, XR experiences, showcases, exhibitions, and labs. These initiatives aim to develop new narratives, share knowledge, and raise awareness of the challenges faced by society and ports, ultimately contributing to innovative solutions and sustainable water management.
